A fiber optic splitter is a passive optical device that enables the
distribution of a light signal from an optical fiber to two or more
fibers. These splitters are used whenever a light beam transmitted
in a network needs to be divided into multiple beams.
When a light signal is transmitted through a single-mode fiber, the
light energy cannot entirely concentrate in the fiber core. Some of
the energy will spread through the fiber cladding. If two fibers
are close enough to each other, the transmitting light in one fiber
can enter into another optical fiber. This technique of
reallocating an optical signal among multiple fibers is what
enables the function of a fiber optic splitter.
